In Scooby Doo The Board Game, you are a member of the Scooby Gang. The gang must work together to gain resources and build traps to capture the Monster. What a perfect concept for a cooperative game.

CMON games are always the best for quality and this is no exception. This game looks fantastic and is themed really well. The miniatures look great, especially the Monsters. The board, the character cards, the miniatures, the mystery machine and the Monsters all come together in a great visual way for the theme. This is the perfect game for any Scooby fan.

The game has 3 different difficulty levels and 3 monsters. Each monster has it’s own unique ability. There is some replay ability but I would love to see additional monsters.

There is a Deluxe version with painted miniatures and additional monsters that looks amazing. I have yet to come across a version but would consider replacing mine just for the variety.

This is a 30 minute cooperative game so it’s a fairly quick experience. If you play a lot of cooperative games, you may feel this one is too light.With that in mind it does play really well as a family game.

Scooby Doo The Board Game was designed by Guilherme Goulart and Fred Perret. It was published by CMON Games. It is a game for 1 to 5 players aged 10 and up and takes about 30 minutes to play.

Setup

Place out the City board.

Shuffle the Scooby Gang cards and place them facedown in the Draw deck spot on the board. Shuffle the Monster cards and place them facedown in the Monster Deck slot on the City board.

Place the resource tokens, monster movement tokens, and haunted location tokens in everyone’s reach.

Place 3 visitor tokens in the Visitor spots in each of the locations.

Place the Mystery Machine on the Vasquez Castle Location. Then place the Mystery Machine card near the board. Add the three gas tokens to the card.

Each player chooses 1 Scooby Gang member card and matching figure. Figures then get placed on their starting location listed on the board. Place your ability token on your gang member card, sandwich side up.

Shuffle the Monster ID Cards and randomly pick one. Place the Monster miniature on the witches shack location.

Decide what level you’d like to play.(green = easy, yellow = medium, red = hard) Shuffle the cards for that level and draw based on the number of players. 1-3 Players use 4 traps and 4-5 Players use 5 traps. For Monster tokens, use 6 for easy or 5 for medium and hard and place on the bottom right spot on the board.

How to Play

Players win once they have completed all the trap cards.

Players lose if 3 locations become haunted, if they run out of monster tokens or if there are not enough Scooby Gang cards to hand out to players.

To start the game all players will draw 2 Scooby Gang cards. Without telling the other players they will choose one to use and the other card is placed face down in the save deck spot on the board. If the draw deck ever runs out, the cards in the save deck will be shuffled and moved to the draw deck spot.

Scooby Gang Cards

Everyone reveals their cards and a Monster card is drawn and revealed.

Scooby Gang cards have a large circle number at the top this is the initiative and the order everyone will play in. Under that number is a foot symbol for how many spaced can be moved. Finally there sometimes will be an effect written on the bottom.

Monster cards are similar to Scooby gang cards. The Monster’s movement will have an arrow colour to follow.

Sort the revealed cards by the initiative numbers for the order to play.

In order players will move and perform the location Action.

1. Movement – Players can move up to the number listed on their card but they cannot move through red walls. Players can also choose to stay in the same spot. Players can move through spots with other players but must end in a location by themselves. Swamp’s End General store is the only location where two players can be together.

The Mystery Machine begins the game at Vasquez Castle. Any location with the mystery machine can have an additional Scooby gang member. Any Scooby Gang member that ends their move in a location with the Mystery Machine can discard a gas token and move themselves, and the mystery machine to a new location. This would happen before they get the Location Action. If they were sharing a location with another Scooby Gang member, the other player can move with them in the van.

2. Location Action

Once movement has ended the player can perform an action on their current location. Each location has different action options, from gathering resources, restoring visitor tokens, removing Monster Tokens, or recovering Scooby Cards.

Gathered resources are stored on the player’s ID card. There’s room for six, any additional resources will have to be removed. The resources can be used to Craft Traps to win the game.

Once a player has all the resources to craft a trap, they will go to Swamp’s End General Store location, turn in the resources and turn that trap card over. Once all the traps are turned over the Scooby Gang wins the game.

Monster Turn

When the Monster’s initiative comes up they will move.

First check the card for the monster eyes symbol. If that is on the card it means the Monster’s Ability on their ID card is active for this turn. All monsters abilities use Monster Tokens. If you run out of Monster Tokens to place the Monster wins the game.

Monsters will move based on the arrow colour and number. A Scooby Gang member will run into fright if they enter a space with the monster, or if the monster enters a space with a Scooby Gang member.

When a Scooby Gang member suffers from fright move 2 cards from the top of the Draw deck to the Discard Deck face up.

Also each time a Monster enters a location, you will remove 1 Visitor Token from that Location, If a location loses all its visitors, it becomes haunted. Add the Haunted Location token over the actions. If there’s 3 haunted locations you will lose the game.

If a location is haunted, player’s cannot perform any actions in that location, the location may never gain Visitor Tokens.

To Refresh A Location, a player must go to the location and then move 2 cards from the Draw Deck to the Discard deck face up. You can then remove the Haunted Location Token and add 3 visitors to that location.

Monster tokens and cards

At the end of each round place the cards used for the turn face up in the discard pile and the Monsters card face up next to the Monster deck. Start a new round.

Hopefully you will complete all the traps in time to win the game.
