Doomlings Upgrade Expansion

Doomlings is a card game, you can find my original review here. It’s enjoyable and if you were thinking of picking up a copy you should. The base game has a good amount of cards and variety. You don’t need the expansions to enjoy the game. However, if you own Doomlings and want more, I highly recommend this expansion.

This is the Upgrade expansion with 81 cards. It is separated into 5 different categories that concentrate on different things. You will need a copy of Doomlings for this expansion.

This expansion has taken a game that I liked to a game that I love. I think having the expansion separated into the 5 categories is a genius idea. It’s not just about shuffling in some more of the same cards, but tailoring the game into more of what you want it to be. Which will make each copy of the game unique. I love “take that” cards, but it’s not for everyone. If that’s not your style you can leave that pack of cards out. For new players, you don’t have to use hidden objective cards if you think that will complicate the game. This expansion let’s you easily tailor the game to what you want it to be.

You are curating your own game and I love that idea. As far as card expansions go, it’s a great start to elevating the game.

Let’s start by going through the different packs.

Dinolings – Dino themed cards that mostly focus on the discard pile. The card traits are hard to pay attention to when the dinosaurs are this adorable.

Mythlings – Fantasy theme cards that adds the take that mechanics. This was my favourite pack. I love the theme of this batch and is the first one I added into the game. For this weight of game I love cards that interact with other players.

Techlings – Futuristic Doomlings that add attachment traits. Personally this was my least favourite pack. I am not into the attaching idea as much. I still added it to my deck, we’ll see if it stays over time.

Multi-Color – These cards act as multiple colours. This pack wasn’t as exciting as some of the others, however the multicolour cards are super practical. These cards are nice to have as a bit of a boost.

The Meaning of life – Hidden objective cards. This pack adds a little extra to the game. With new players I leave it out for their first time. Overall, it’s a great addition that adds a bit of a challenge.

These packs have a little something for everyone. If you find Doomlings is getting to the table often, it’s definitely a good edition to the game to give some new variety.
