Scream is a game where you are racing against Ghost Face to complete scenes. You will draw cards and trade with other players to get the cards you need. Ghost face will be calling to set you back so working together is key for success. This is a 3 to 8 player game for ages 13 and up and takes about 20 minutes to play.
I picked up a copy of Scream at Comic-Con, I love trying IP games even though a lot of times IPs can be misses. From the box, I liked the look of it, I was intrigued by Ghost Face calling throughout the game but I was worried the gameplay seemed way to simple for this to be fun. After a few games, I still think the gameplay is simple, but when you add the intensity of the app with the continuous phone calls, I don’t think I could handle anything harder. The first time we played we lost badly, once we got the hang of it and started working together it was still a challenge but we made it through.
The board and the ghost face figure are a bit unnecessary for game play, but they look good so I’m not going to complain too much about that. This is really where Funko games shines, I couldn’t imagine them putting out a game without a cool mini. Passing the knife around as fast as you play ended up being a bit hilarious. This isn’t a big game but everything works together well and the theme really comes through.
I’m not usually big into app games, in this case it worked well. First I like that the how to video is available in the app. You can choose if you want strong language and you can choose the difficulty level. The app is basically a timer for the game, with calls that come through. Some are for discarding a hand, some can make you lose the game. It’s simple and that’s what makes it work, the app doesn’t take away from the gameplay it just enhances it. It keeps you on edge and moving fast.
The game is cooperative, so you will need to help out others from Ghost face’s threats and sometimes that means trading away the cards you actually need. Those setbacks help the game feel harder. I’ve only played with a group of 5 but it does go up to 8 players so I would like to try with a larger group. This feels like a great party game.

Contents
- Ghost face figure
- Location board
- Knife marker with base
- 60 scream cards
- 24 scene cards
Please note you will also need to download the app to play.
Set Up
Place the location board with the ghost face figure nearby. Shuffle the scream cards and place them facedown in a pile. Create the scene deck, remove cards based on the number of players. For eight players keep all the scene cards. Each player gets a scene card placed face down in front of them. They will turn it over once the game starts. Deal three scream cards to each player, they can be viewed but not shared with the other players. Download the app and follow the prompts.
How to Play
Once the game starts it will move quickly so make sure everyone has watched the how to video before playing. Once the game starts on a player’s turn they have one action. There are three actions to choose from:
- Draw a Card
- Trade a Card
- Finish a scene
Once the player has chosen an action the knife goes to the next player.
Since you don’t know other player’s cards trading can be a bit of a guess but you will get the hang of what to look for. Once a scene is finished it is discarded and that player can draw a new one. If there’s no scene cards to pick up, continue playing with the focus on helping others.
As for Ghost face and his movements, he will call during the game and it will tell you where to place him.
If Ghost face attacks and kills one of the players you lose the game. You can also lose if you run out of time which isn’t as scary but very frustrating. To win you must complete all the scenes in the deck.
Should you find it a bit easy, don’t worry there is a hard mode. Definitely worth taking a stab at.
