It’s finally spooky season and also my favourite board game season. There’s so many halloween games available, if you add some decorations and themed snack and you have yourself quite a night.
This list is in no particular order but some options if you are trying to put together an evening for friends this halloween
The Night Cage
The Night Cage is a 1 to 5 player cooperative game where you are crawling through a dark labyrinth with nothing but a candle all while avoiding monsters. Each player will need to find a key and get to a gate before the candle burns out. The board is a black and white grid and you will be adding and taking away tiles as you move around the board. The design is simple and fairly abstract which feeds into the theme well.
Psycho Killer
Read my full review of Psycho Killer here.
Psycho Killer is a fairly light “take that” card game for 2 to 6 players. It plays very quickly so I like to bring it out after something heavier. In this game you are trying to avoid the Psycho Killer and have the least amount of Injury Points. You will be doing everything you can to give your injuries to someone else before the 5th psycho killer card is drawn and the game ends.
Scooby Doo The Board Game
Read my full review of Scooby Doo The Board Game here.
CMON did an amazing job with this Scooby Doo Game. This is a cooperative 1 to 5 player family game. The game really uses the Scooby Doo IP well, the miniatures are amazing making it a must for anyone who collects Scooby merchandise. Luckily the game is fun too, you are playing as one of your favourite Scooby character, moving around the board collecting pieces and trying to not get frightened. There are a couple different levels of difficulty and a few different villains to play offering a bit of variety each time.
Disney’s The Haunted Mansion – Call of the Spirits Game
This is a 2 to 4 player family game based on the famous Disney ride, The Haunted Mansion. You will gain points by collecting ghost cards and avoiding haunt cards. The Haunted Mansion is my favourite ride so this game was a must for me.
Onirim
Read my full review of Onirim here.
This is my most played solo game. The game is a deck of cards, you will be going through the deck trying to find keys and unlock doors all while avoiding nightmares. It seems easy enough but the cards often don’t work in your favour so it can be a challenge.
Betrayal at House on the Hill
This is a classic 3 to 6 player haunted house game. You and your friends will explore a haunted house until one player turns on everyone else. It’s an interesting concept, it can be confusing for whoever the traitor is because they will have to learn their set of rules. It’s a lot quicker than a game like Mansions of Madness.
Mansions of Madness 2nd Edition
Mansions of Madness is a 1 to 5 player game based on H.P. Lovecraft’s writing. This is another one that feels like an experience over a game. This is an app driven game where you and your friends work together as different characters and explore a mansion looking for answers. This game is long and has various different scenarios. It comes with some amazing game pieces including a lot of miniature. The app works seamlessly with the game, keeping track of what you are doing. It’s like having a DM directing you through. This also allows you to start playing quickly. This is the type of game you build your evening around, the shortest scenario is 60-90 minutes but it is well worth your time.
Campy Creatures
Read my full review of Campy Creatures here.
Campy Creatures is a 2 to 5 player game where players are mad scientists that need to collect mortals for experiments. Each player will have a hand of monster cards they will use to for bidding to collect sets of cards. This is a small box game with some amazing art and pretty good gameplay.
Monster Fluxx
Read my full review of Monster Fluxx here.
Monster Fluxx is a fairly quick 2 to 6 player “take that” style game. The game starts with a only a couple rules. The rules and end condition will be added and change throughout the game. It’s light, fun and of course for halloween features a bunch of monsters.
Mysterium
Mysterium is a 2 to 7 player game where one player is a ghost communicating through visions which are represented by these beautiful abstract cards. This game has a bit of a set up but looks amazing. The theming is fantastic and really sets up the spooky vibe. Definitely recommend if you like Clue.
Mysterium Park
Read my full review of Mysterium Park here.
Mysterium Park is a 2 to 6 player cooperative game. Similar to Mysterium, it is carnival themed and a little bit more streamlined. I loved the look of Mysterium more, but this one is just a lot easy to set up and play. One player is the ghost giving visual card clues to rule out suspects. If you like Clue or DixiT this good be a good fit.
Scream The Board Game
Read my full review of Scream here.
Scream is a 3 to 8 player party game. You need the app for this so that Ghostface has a way to phone you and demand cards plus it is the timer for the game. Basically it’s a matching game and reading the description I thought it seemed too easy. Then I played it. This gets surprisingly intense right away. Everyone has to work together and move quickly to get through all the scene cards. It’s a speed game that works really well with the theme.
Ghost Stories
This is another cooperative game for 1 to 4 players and as a full warning, this is a tough one to win. In Ghost stories you are warrior monks trying to exercise ghosts and even on easy settings, there are a lot of ghosts. This one can be very intense, which isn’t necessarily a bad thing. I would say this is the most difficult game on the list.
Munchkin Scooby Doo
That’s right I have multiple Scooby Doo games on this list. Munchkin has been around for quite some time, this is the only version of it I own. If you are a fan of Munchkin or Scooby Doo this is a really cool combo. Acquire items and vehicles so you can capture Monsters to level up. First player to level 10 wins.
Don’t Go in There
Don’t Go In There is a 2 to 5 player game where you are a kid that wanders into a haunted house. On your turn place a meeple in one of the three rooms. The further you go into the room the more likely you will get the card you want but you run the risk of getting more ghosts haunting you. Once all the meeples are on the board, the dice are rolled to determine ghosts players will get. Ghost are a negative, cards can be used to gain points. This is a quicker game only taking about half an hour. The game looks great, there’s a little push your luck to it and not as scary as others on this list.
Horrified
Horrified is a cooperative game for 1-5 players featuring a lot of classic monsters. There are a few versions of the game now with different characters. I have the original with Frankenstein, Dracula, The Invisible Man and a few more. You and your friends will work together to get these monsters to leave town and stop terrorizing the townspeople. Each monster is defeated in different ways and there’s different levels of difficulty so you can switch up the game each time you play.
Final Girl
Final Girl is an amazing solo game. So if you are into a night in by yourself and want something with a good production value this is definitely for you. For final girl you will need to buy the core box and then at least one Feature film box which will have a killer and location. Each feature box can be mixed and matched with other feature boxes. In Final Gil you are the the female hero of the film who needs to kill the slasher. Each Final Girl and villain has their own abilities. You will spend the game trying to defend yourself and get innocent people to safety. If you like solo games this is as good as it gets, it is an amazing game system.
